Novation implicating a new ‘Slicer’ DJ controller?

While I’m still getting to grips with my Native Instruments Kontrol S4, I’m already receiving signal that a new Novation DJ controller is on its’ way.
One can only think of what Novation will call this one. First they came with the ‘Dicer’, so this could be a ‘Slicer’?

What can we expect?
A few experts over at DJTechTools already came up with this mockup:

nem0nic(Craig Reeves) was able to conjure this up together with a few others, photojojo(Chris Jennings), by just watching this youtube vid.

When can we expect it?
Novation stated around the fifth of April this year? (Thanks for reminding, Twumpy!)

Controlled Demolition

With all the MIDIcontrollers that people can get in the nearest musicstore or webshop, it’s getting easier to get yourself a MIDI controller that fits your needs.

But what if, you find that one controller is getting close, but is not close enough. At that point you can choose to DIY a modification to multiple controllers, or even build one from scratch.

Enter Ray, who as Controlled Demolition is the current BeatBattle champion in Germany.
Even though the Akai APC40 came close to his liking, he thought the Akai APC 40 was not enough.

The Akai APC40 is one of the best designed controllers for Ableton Live, Ray thought it was still lacking control.
He decided to merge this controller with an Akai APC20, in order to fulfill his needs.

He merged these two and decided to call it APC80. Many think 40+20 would be 60 but, being that this modification leaves you to dabble with a grid of 80 buttons, this name only seems logical.

I had the change to get to know Ray through MIDIfight club, the party that had me going to spin tunes in Tresor Berlin earlier this year. But all I can say is; this remarkable cool guy has devised a beast of a controller.
Here you can see both Ray and the APC80 in action. I have to warn you though, all speech is handled in German, but all commands are done in MIDI. And you know the creed: “In MIDI we Trust!”, right?

Way before I got into singing, producing and DJing, I was an avid practitioner of aggressive sports.
Months on end I passed time by riding my skates or skateboard and grinding all ledges and rails I came across.

Guru R.I.P. 1966 – 2010

Helaas is gisteren de Rapper GURU overleden. De rapper die, onder andere, in 1993 met Jazzmatazz de wereld klaarmaakte voor een pure combinatie van Jazz en Hiphop is niet meer.

Keith Helma, zoals GURU zijn echte naam luidde, heeft helaas zijn strijd tegen een hardnekkige kanker met de dood moeten bekopen.
Eerder lag hij al geruime tijd in coma, hetgeen al weggaf dat de beste man het niet lang meer zou maken.

Hier een grote passage uit de afscheidsbrief die hij geschreven heeft voor zijn fans, vrienden en familie:

I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options. I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting.

… als een grootheid als Funk D’Void je bedankt voor de tips die je via Twitter hebt gegeven!

Hij was opzoek hoe hij zijn live DJ sets kon streamen, dus noemde ik een paar dingetjes waar ik wel eens wat over had opgevangen en ook waar ik in het verleden ook wel wat ervaring ee had.

Korg iElectribe for iPad

Daniel heeft een tijd een Korg Electribe in bruikleen gehad. We hebben er toendertijd heel erg leuk mee geëxperimenteerd en ook leuke resultaten mee geboekt.
Zodoende hoop ik eigenlijk dat dit leuke (virtuele) machientje nou ook maar eens te koop komt voor normale Mac of PC, als VST.

Nooit verwacht om te zien dat mensen een Novation Launchpad naast een Akai APC40 zouden gebruiken.

Als je mij mijn eerlijke mening zou vragen, zou ik je tot een paar minuten terug hebben gezegd dat dit a- niet mogelijk was om deze twee naast elkaar te kunnen gebruiken in Ableton en b- het volslagen onzin zou zijn.

Nu ik dit filmpje gezien heb, weet ik in ieder geval dat ik punt a in ieder geval weg kan strepen.

Ondertussen is het alweer 10 jaar terug dat Ableton Live zijn eerste voorzichtige passen zette in de wilde muziekwereld.

Tegenwoordig is er door de jaren heen MIDI en VST technologie toegevoegd. Om nog maar over de speciaal voor het pakket ontworpen controllers en software, Max4Live, even te zwijgen.
De toenemende manieren waarop het pakket gebruikt wordt, zorgt er alleen maar voor dat het continue tegen zijn grenzen gedrukt wordt en zelfs dat het weer een nieuw uitbreidingen en opwaarderingen krijgt.

Hulde!

We hopen natuurlijk dat we in de loop der jaren nog maar lang gebruik kunnen maken van Ableton Live.
